Summary

National Agriculture Market (e-NAM) was launched in April 2016 as a pan-India online trading platform for agricultural products. Its main aim is to create a unified national market by digitally connecting existing agricultural markets (mandis) across the country.

  • It helps overcome the limitations of traditional APMC mandis by connecting markets across different states, giving farmers and traders access to a larger market and wider trading opportunities.

Introduction

Agricultural marketing plays an important role in ensuring that farmers receive fair prices for their produce. However, traditional agricultural markets often face challenges such as limited market access, lack of price transparency, multiple intermediaries, and restrictions on trading across different regions. To address these issues and modernise agricultural marketing, the Government of India launched the National Agriculture Market (e-NAM) in April 2016.

e-NAM is a pan-India electronic trading platform that digitally connects existing agricultural markets or mandis across the country. Its vision of “One Nation, One Market” aims to create a more integrated, transparent, and efficient agricultural marketing system. By using digital technology, e-NAM helps farmers access wider markets, obtain better price information, and connect directly with buyers and traders beyond their local mandis.

Key Features of e-NAM

  • One Nation, One Market: e-NAM works through a modern digital system that includes a web portal, mobile app, and AI-based quality testing tools, making agricultural trading easier and more transparent.
  • Implementation: The Small Farmers’ Agribusiness Consortium (SFAC) is the main agency responsible for implementing e-NAM under the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare.
  • Integration with e-NWR System: Farmers, traders, and Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) can store their agricultural produce in WDRA-accredited warehouses, receive an Electronic Negotiable Warehouse Receipt (e-NWR), and sell their produce directly through the e-NAM platform.
    • An e-NWR, issued under the Warehousing (Development and Regulation) Act, 2007, is a secure digital document that proves ownership of commodities stored in warehouses recognised by the Warehousing Development and Regulatory Authority (WDRA).
  • Other Features: e-NAM also provides facilities such as inter-state trading, live market price information, a 12-language interface, single-window services, and the Platform of Platforms (PoP), making agricultural marketing more accessible and efficient.

Key Achievements of e-NAM

  • Expanded Network: The number of mandis connected to e-NAM increased from 1,389 in 2024 to 1,656 by March 2026, showing the growing reach of the platform.
  • Growth in Agricultural Trade: Between 2016 and March 2026, e-NAM facilitated the trading of around 13.25 crore metric tonnes of agricultural commodities, with a total trade value of approximately ₹4.84 lakh crore.
  • Wider Reach: The platform has registered more than 1.80 crore farmers, 2.73 lakh traders, and 4,724 Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs), highlighting its growing role in connecting different stakeholders in the agricultural market.

Benefits for Farmers

e-NAM has made agricultural marketing more transparent and accessible for farmers. Through the platform, farmers can access real-time information about market prices, compare prices across different mandis, and explore trading opportunities beyond their local markets. This wider access can help reduce information gaps and improve farmers’ ability to make informed decisions about where and when to sell their produce.

The integration of digital services also reduces dependence on traditional intermediaries and promotes greater transparency in agricultural transactions. Features such as online bidding, electronic payments, and quality assessment further contribute to a more efficient marketing process.

Role in Modernising Agricultural Markets

e-NAM represents an important step towards the digital transformation of India’s agricultural marketing system. By connecting mandis through a common online platform, it promotes greater integration between agricultural markets across states.

The platform also supports the development of a more organised agricultural supply chain by linking farmers, traders, Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs), warehouses, and other market participants. Integration with systems such as Electronic Negotiable Warehouse Receipts (e-NWRs) allows farmers to store their produce safely and sell it when market conditions are favourable, reducing the pressure to make immediate distress sales.

Conclusion

The National Agriculture Market (e-NAM) is an important initiative for modernising and integrating India’s agricultural marketing system. By digitally connecting mandis across the country, the platform aims to create a more transparent, competitive, and efficient market for agricultural produce. Its features, including online trading, real-time price information, inter-state trade, quality assessment, and integration with warehouse receipt systems, have expanded market opportunities for farmers and other stakeholders.

With its growing network of mandis, farmers, traders, and Farmer Producer Organisations, e-NAM is gradually strengthening the vision of “One Nation, One Market.” Beyond simply digitising agricultural trade, the platform has the potential to empower farmers with better market information, wider access to buyers, and improved opportunities for price discovery. Overall, e-NAM represents an important step towards building a more connected, technology-driven, and farmer-friendly agricultural marketing ecosystem in India.
