ISRO Identifies Cause of PSLV-C61/EOS-09 Mission Failure

  • The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has concluded its investigation into the PSLV-C61/EOS-09 mission failure that occurred on May 18, 2025. ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan confirmed that the Failure Analysis Committee has pinpointed the cause.
  • Mission Objective: To place EOS-09, an Earth Observation Satellite, into a sun-synchronous polar orbit.
  • Launch Vehicle: PSLV-C61, launched from Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota.
  • Launch Outcome: Lift-off and performance were normal until the second stage; an anomaly in the third stage led to mission failure.

LVM3 Rocket with Semi-Cryogenic Engine

  • The LVM3 (formerly GSLV Mk III), India’s most powerful rocket, will be upgraded with a semi-cryogenic engine stage, replacing the current L110 liquid propellant stage.
  • The new stage will use refined kerosene (RP-1) and liquid oxygen (LOX), a shift from the traditional hypergolic propellants.
  • The SE2000 semi-cryogenic engine is under testing. It will provide 200 tonnes of thrust, compared to 80 tonnes by the current Vikas engine.

National Child Survey to Develop Child Index Under Mission Vatsalya

PAN 2.0 Project

5 August 2025
  • The Income Tax Department has awarded LTIMindtree Ltd the contract for upgrading India’s PAN and TAN management infrastructure under the PAN 2.0 Project, a significant leap in digitizing public tax services. The project was approved by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) in November 2024 and aligns with the Digital India mission.
  • Permanent Account Number (PAN) – PAN (Permanent Account Number) is a 10-character alphanumeric identifier issued by the Income Tax Department of India to individuals, companies, and other entities. It is essential for tracking financial transactions and ensuring tax compliance under the Income Tax Act, 1961.
  • Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number (TAN) – TAN (Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number) is a 10-digit alphanumeric number issued by the Income Tax Department of India to entities responsible for deducting or collecting tax at source (TDS/TCS) under the Income Tax Act, 1961.
  • Seamless interoperability with other government systems, positioning PAN as a universal digital identifier

Cloudburst

6 August 2025
  • Climate Change: Warmer air holds more water vapor. For every 1°C temperature rise, the atmosphere retains 7% more moisture, increasing the likelihood of intense short-duration rainfall events.
  • A cloudburst is an extremely intense rainfall event over a small area within a short duration. As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), it is defined as rainfall exceeding 100 mm per hour across an area of 20–30 sq km. However, a 2023 study by IIT Jammu and the National Institute of Hydrology (NIH) redefined this as rainfall of 100–250 mm/hour concentrated in just 1 sq km, making it one of the most hyper-local and destructive meteorological phenomena.
  • Fragile Ecosystems: High-altitude settlements (1,000–2,000m) are ecologically sensitive and structurally unprepared for such events.
  • High Cost of Modern Tech: AI-based early warning systems and high-resolution radars remain underfunded.

Revised Income Tax Bill, 2025

Jal Jeevan Mission
