IFSCA Grade A Salary and Job Profile: Pay Scale, Perks and GIFT City

In one line

IFSCA is a statutory regulator and pays on its own scale, close to the one RBI uses rather than a government Pay Commission scale. For a body that recruits ten to twenty people a cycle, the package is a large part of why the exam is worth writing.

Pay scale

The scale published for Assistant Manager (Grade A):

₹44,500 – 2,500 (4) – 54,500 – 2,850 (7) – 74,450 – EB – 2,850 (4) – 85,850 – 3,300 (1) – 89,150

StageBasic payAnnual increment
On joining₹44,500₹2,500 × 4
After 4 years₹54,500₹2,850 × 7
After 11 years₹74,450efficiency bar, then ₹2,850 × 4
After 15 years₹85,850₹3,300 × 1
Top of the scale₹89,150—

In practice you are promoted out of the Grade A scale well before you reach its top.

More on this exam

At entry level, gross emoluments come to approximately ₹1,43,000 per month, which includes allowances and IFSCA’s contribution to NPS. That figure is built from:

  • Basic pay
  • Grade allowance
  • Special allowance
  • Dearness allowance
  • Local allowance
  • Family allowance
  • Employer contribution to NPS

It is gross. Income tax and your own NPS contribution come out of it, so plan your monthly budget against a materially lower figure and use the gross only for comparing offers.

The job

IFSCA is the unified regulator for International Financial Services Centres — in practice, GIFT City in Gandhinagar. Inside an IFSC it does the work that RBI, SEBI, IRDAI and PFRDA do elsewhere, which makes the job unusually broad for an entry-level regulator post. An Assistant Manager can end up on:

  • Banking — IFSC banking units and their regulation
  • Capital markets — exchanges, clearing corporations, intermediaries and listings inside the IFSC
  • Funds — fund management entities and the schemes they run
  • Insurance — IFSC insurance offices and reinsurance
  • Bullion — the International Bullion Exchange
  • Aircraft and ship leasing, and other newer activities as they are brought in
  • Policy and international affairs — framing regulations, consultation papers, and IFSCA’s engagement with other jurisdictions

Two honest observations. First, the posting is Gandhinagar — that is where IFSCA sits, and unlike RBI or a bank there is no national network of postings to move between. If you want to be near home and home is not Gujarat, weigh that properly. Second, because the organisation is small and young, the work reaches you earlier than it would in a large regulator: a new officer at IFSCA is closer to the drafting of a regulation than a new officer at a body with thousands of staff. Whether that is an attraction or a pressure depends on you.

How it compares

SEBI pays more. IFSCA has far fewer posts but also a far smaller applicant pool, a broader remit for an entry officer, and — the practical point — a syllabus you are largely preparing anyway. For most candidates the question is not IFSCA or SEBI; it is whether to write both, and the answer is usually yes.
