Status: we have not found a published 2026 Assistant Manager advertisement on irdai.gov.in. What IRDAI has said publicly is that it intends to recruit 40 Assistant Managers a year across 2025, 2026 and 2027. Until an advertisement with a vacancy figure and an application link appears in the Careers section of irdai.gov.in, nothing else is official.

What this exam ismost asked
The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India regulates insurance and reinsurance in India — who may sell it, on what terms, how much capital they must hold, and what happens when policyholders are treated badly. Assistant Manager, Grade A, is the entry officer post. The head office is in Hyderabad.
Recruitment is stream-wise, and you apply to exactly one:
- Generalist — always the largest stream
- Actuarial
- Finance
- Law
- Information Technology
- Research
The last advertisement: 49 posts

| Stream | Posts |
|---|---|
| Generalist | 24 |
| Actuarial | 5 |
| Finance | 5 |
| Law | 5 |
| Information Technology | 5 |
| Research | 5 |
| Total | 49 |
Category-wise those 49 posts ran UR 21, EWS 4, OBC 12, SC 8 and ST 4.
The shape matters more than the total. Generalist is half the posts and many times the applicants; the five specialist streams have five posts each and a pool restricted to people holding a particular qualification. If you hold an actuarial, law, IT, finance or research qualification, applying as a Generalist is usually the harder route, not the safer one.

Selection process
Three stages, and the first one does not count.
| Stage | What it is |
|---|---|
| Phase I — Prelims | Objective. Reasoning, English, General Awareness and Quantitative Aptitude, 40 questions each — 160 questions, 160 marks, 90 minutes composite. Negative marking one-fourth. Qualifying only, with sectional and overall cut offs |
| Phase II — Mains | Three descriptive papers of 100 marks and 60 minutes each: Paper I English, Paper II Economic and Social Issues impacting Insurance, Paper III Insurance and Management. Written on answer sheets |
| Phase III — Interview | For candidates who clear the Mains |
Final selection is on the Mains and the interview. Your Phase I marks are gone the moment you qualify — and note that sectional cut offs mean a strong aggregate does not save you if one section collapses.
The detail is on the exam pattern page.
How to apply when it opens
- Go to irdai.gov.in and open the Careers section. The advertisement PDF and the Apply Online link appear there together.
- Read the advertisement before you register — the stream and its qualification clause above all, because the stream cannot be changed after submission.
- Fill the form and upload photograph, signature and handwritten declaration in the formats specified.
- Pay the fee online, submit, then download and print the completed application.
- The application window has usually stayed open about a month. Do not leave it to the last day.
What to do while you wait
Phase I is a standard bank-pattern paper, so that base stays useful whatever else you write. The part that is specific to IRDAI — and the part that actually decides selection — is Phase II: Economic and Social Issues impacting Insurance, and Insurance and Management. Those are not sections you can build in the month after an advertisement appears.
- Check the eligibility bar for your stream before you invest months in it.
- Salary and job profile — what the post pays and what the work actually is.
- Three descriptive papers in one day is a writing test as much as a knowledge test. The habits on our descriptive English page transfer directly.
- Daily current affairs and the daily quiz, free — and worth following with an eye on insurance-sector news specifically.
- Previous year papers.
