- It comes into force on 30 December 2024 to address the role of the EU market in global deforestation and biodiversity loss.
- It recognises and supports deforestation-free supply chains and human rights and rights of indigenous peoples.
- It is primarily about products concerning their export to the EU in relation to the area of land on which they were produced-about beef, cocoa, timber, coffee, oil palm, rubber, and soybeans.
- Makes it mandatory for exporters to prove that such products are not sourced from land where forests have never been felled from 1 January 2021.
- Even small players of the supply chain will be liable and will be sanctioned if any rules are breached.
- It has penalties that include fines and restrictions to entry into the EU market, should such noncompliance occur.
- It puts in place a country benchmarking that calculates the risk of each country in terms of deforestation and degradation.
