- The ONOE concept of India gives a call to conduct simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies from every part of the country.
- It is bringing about the simultaneous conduct of polls rather than having staggered elections at different intervals for different legislatures.
- Consolidation of all elections means that they would take place at one time instead of seperately.
Benefits of ONOE
- Savings in reduced election expenses and lower administrative costs.
- Lesser interruption on Governance:
- Governance gets enough time to focus on governance because it will hold the offices for five years.
- Voter Engagement:
- Voting process will increase voters and be more informed.
- Greater Political Stability:
- Enables political parties to focus on long-term governance rather than short-term campaigning.
- Quicker Decision Making and Development:
- Governments can then spend much more time implementing policy rather than having to face disruption by frequent elections.
- Vote Bank Politics:
- It restrains the regional as well as state-level vote bank politics sometimes of overshadowing national issues.
- It restrains the regional as well as state-level vote bank politics sometimes of overshadowing national issues.
Disadvantages of ONOE
- Logistical and Organizational Problems:
- Electoral Logistics are quite big and the burden for the Election Authorities very heavy.
- Complexity in Implementation:
- To this end, several constitutional amendments would be necessary.
- Tenures Reduced:
- State government tenures can be reduced or, on the contrary, lengthened to coincide with Lok Sabha election cycles.
- Impact on Federalism:
- It lowers State Autonomy and less state at orientation.
- Polarization and Nationalization of Politics:
- The national issues will become vital at one level, and there will be very little space for local regional party interests to bring up their problems.
- Disruption of Voter Sentiment:
- Voters may experience a degree of confusion about the overload of elections happening at the same time.
- Exposure to New Events:
- Running multiple elections at the same time makes it more prone to having something go wrong-say even a natural disaster, security issue, or any delay.
