Context:
Odisha has proposed upgrading Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary into Debrigarh-Gaur National Park to strengthen conservation of the Indian gaur and other wildlife.
About Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary
Location
- Situated in Bargarh district, Odisha.
- Located along the Hirakud Reservoir, formed by the Hirakud Dam on the Mahanadi River.
- Covers an area of 353 sq km, with about 290.65 sq km proposed as the core National Park area.
- Dominated by tropical dry deciduous forests, grasslands, rocky hills, valleys, and seasonal streams.
- The proposed National Park area is free from human settlements and livestock, providing an undisturbed habitat.
- The sanctuary has significant historical importance as Veer Surendra Sai used its forests as a base during his resistance against British rule.
