How Is the Score Calculated?
Four indicators, with different weights:
| Indicator | Weight | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| Undernourishment | One-third | Share of the population whose calorie intake is insufficient |
| Child stunting | One-sixth | Children under 5 with low height for their age |
| Child wasting | One-sixth | Children under 5 with low weight for their height |
| Child mortality | One-third | Children who die before their fifth birthday |
How Is the Score Read?
- The scale runs from 0 to 100
- 0 is the best score — no hunger
- 100 is the worst

- The global score rose from 17.6 in 2018 to 18.1 in 2026
- That is a moderate level of hunger globally — but it has worsened

- GHI 2026 — India 100th of 122, score 24.1, in the “serious” category
- Released 14 October 2026 in Berlin, ahead of World Food Day, 16 October
- Published by Welthungerhilfe, with IFHV and Helvetas; title “No Security Without Food Security”
- Four indicators: undernourishment (1/3), child stunting (1/6), child wasting (1/6), child mortality (1/3)
- Global score: 17.6 (2018) → 18.1 (2026); worse in 32 countries; 57 countries off track for 2030

- GHI severity bands: low (under 9.9), moderate (10-19.9), serious (20-34.9), alarming (35-49.9), extremely alarming (50 and above)
- India has consistently rejected the GHI methodology. The government’s objections are that three of four indicators cover only children under five, the undernourishment figure rests on a small opinion poll sample, and the index does not capture India’s food security programmes
- India’s own nutrition data comes from the NFHS; NFHS-5 recorded stunting 35.5 per cent, wasting 19.3 per cent and underweight 32.1 per cent among children under five
- India’s programmes: NFSA, 2013 covering about 80 crore people, PMGKAY, Poshan Abhiyaan, PM POSHAN (mid-day meal) and Saksham Anganwadi
- SDG 2 is Zero Hunger by 2030
