National Service Scheme (NSS) Day is observed on 24 September every year.
NSS was formally launched on 24 September 1969 in 37 universities.
It operates under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and focuses on student participation in community service and nation-building activities.
The launch year, 1969, coincided with the birth centenary of Mahatma Gandhi.
