Context
In response to two powerful earthquakes that struck Venezuela on Wednesday evening (followed by a 4.9-magnitude aftershock on Friday off the northern coast) — killing 920+ people and injuring 4,300+ in northern Venezuela — the Government of India on Friday, 26 June 2026 launched “Operation Amistad” (“Amistad” = friendship in Spanish) — a Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) mission. Announced by EAM Dr. S. Jaishankar, the mission deployed two Indian Air Force C-17 Globemaster III strategic transport aircraft carrying a 41-member medical team from the Indian Army’s 60 Para Field Hospital (including 9 military doctors), an Indian Army Field Hospital unit, ~35 tonnes of relief supplies, 6 tonnes of medicines and medical equipment, and two BHISHM Cubes (modular portable hospitals under India’s Aarogya Maitri Project). The aircraft covered nearly 14,300 km — one of the farthest humanitarian deployments ever undertaken by India — reaffirming India’s positioning as a global first responder and strengthening its Latin American/Global South humanitarian diplomacy under the Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam ethos.
