Context
On Wednesday, 8 July 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, visited the iconic Prambanan Temple complex in Yogyakarta, Java (Indonesia) — jointly inaugurating a joint conservation and restoration project for this UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) will be the lead agency from the Indian side.
About Prambanan Temple
- Location: ~17 km northeast of Yogyakarta city, Central Java, Indonesia.
- Built: 9th–10th century (~1,000+ years old).
- Built by: Sanjaya dynasty — patrons of Shaivism in ancient Java.
- Dedication: Primarily to Lord Shiva — also Brahma + Vishnu (Trimurti).
- Sanctuaries: Also for the vahanas — Nandi (Shiva’s bull), Garuda (Vishnu’s eagle), Hamsa (Brahma’s swan).
- Central Shiva temple: 47 metres (154 feet) tall — tallest at Prambanan.
- Reliefs: Intricate stone reliefs depicting the Ramayana — among the finest in Asia.
- Living heritage: Ramayana Ballet performed near Prambanan — popular with tourists.
