Why in News?
For the first time in India, scientists have identified and genetically characterized Parrot Bornavirus 4 (PaBV-4) circulating among captive birds.
What is PaBV-4?
- Parrot Bornavirus 4 (PaBV-4) is a single-stranded RNA virus belonging to the species Orthobornavirus alphapsittaciforme.
- It is the primary cause of Proventricular Dilatation Disease (PDD), a serious neurological and digestive disease affecting parrots and related birds.
- The virus mainly infects psittacine birds, including parrots, macaws, parakeets, cockatiels, and lovebirds.
