Context
The 2026 Fields Medal — mathematics’ highest honour — was awarded on 23 July 2026 at the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) in Philadelphia, USA.
What It Is
- Often called the “Nobel Prize of Mathematics”, recognising outstanding mathematical achievement in existing work and the promise of future achievement.
- Awarded by the International Mathematical Union (IMU) every four years at the ICM.
- Established in 1936 from a trust fund created by Canadian mathematician John Charles Fields at the University of Toronto.
Key Highlights:
- Recipients: Yu Deng, John Pardon, Jacob Tsimerman and Hong Wang.
- Hong Wang made history as only the third woman in the medal’s 90-year history to receive it.
- Wang and Deng became the first Chinese-born recipients since Shing-Tung Yau in 1982 — a gap of 44 years — and the first two to win simultaneously.
